Baby's First Birthday!

Get creative with your maps! This one here is for a baby's first birthday taking place in Bel Air, Ca. It highlights all the fun things to do in the LA area: Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Mann's Chinese Theater, and Downtown. It even points the way to Disneyland in the south and San Francisco in the north. Since the party is at a country club, I've drawn a pair of little spectator shoes which is my favorite part of this map. The family dog denotes the general area of the family's home. What a fun way to commemorate such a special day. And, it goes to show the maps work for more than just weddings, but other events as well.

Copperplate Script

I just wanted to publish this post about Copperplate Script calligraphy. It is one of my favorite scripts, it is clean, simple, and classic. For those of you on a budget, it happens to be in the lowest price tier on my website. It is the perfect example of getting a gorgeous script at a reasonable rate. I am a huge advocate of budgeting calligraphy into your stationery purchase ahead of time, but in case you forgot, this is the perfect script for you.

light-hearted script style.

Map of Santa Barbara Polo Club

I just love this map I was asked to create for the SB Polo and Racquet Club. A perfect place for weddings and other events, the Polo Club wanted a map to put up on their website and also to include with their printed matter they send out to members and guests on occasion. I thought it was a great idea, and it looks great in full color.

Calligraphy on Spanish Tiles

These hand-painted tiles are so perfect for beachy summer weddings, especially those that have a Spanish theme! Each tile is painted by hand with a name and a table number, and are such a special unique way to direct your guests to their seat, and they double as an adorable keepsake too! {Calligraphy in Rosen Script}

Meaningful monograms

Monograms are the perfect way to "brand" your wedding. They can be used everywhere from your cocktail napkins, to your invitations, to your menus. You can even use lighting to shine your monogram down on the dance floor at your reception. Above I have the same monogram for a napkin as on the menu {bottom} but on the menu we have embellished it quite a bit to make it stand out against all the calligraphy. All the monograms above were written in the Splendid flourish style, as it's flourishes really add to the beauty of the individual letters in the monograms. Both invitations in my calligraphy were created by Melanie at Lucky Paperie.

Adorable Save the Dates

Here's a beautiful Save the Date idea, hand calligraphy for the text and a beautiful water color iris design. I painted this iris a while back and thought it would be perfect on an invitation or save the date. Print it on white paper and it goes great mounted on a matching purple backer card. The only thing missing is a purple envelope with white writing! The script is done in Splendid Flourish. Since it's several colors it can be printed in flat printing and would look so elegant to announce your upcoming wedding.

A Brooklyn Wedding

I truly love this map I did recently for a wedding in Brooklyn, NY. The wedding is taking place at the Tobacco Warehouse, in the area between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. I just loved the idea of incorporating the bridges, I think that is what makes this map so special. The map also takes into account the heritage of both the bride and groom. She is Egyptian and he is Dominican, so Sherien wanted to put a little of that flair into the map. I added palm trees to the border and a little pyramid and camel to the map as a nod to their cultures.
Isn't the sphinx so cute?

Envelope Calligraphy

Now that my new site is up and the old site has been taken down, I wanted to just post all the little envelope tifs that were painstakingly put together by Melanie at Lucky Paperie, now located in Atlanta. Each little envelope displays one of my calligraphy styles, and they looked so cute, I just couldn't let them be gone forever.

All the calligraphy styles are available on my new site, under event calligraphy, but I've now featured actual photos, because I felt the old site did not display enough photos of my work. I hope that it does now!

Letterpress Invitations!

More invitations have come back from the printers, and it is a very exciting time at the LH Calligraphy Studio. This is a classy set from my new line, in the "Windsor" style. It looks so elegant in black letterpress on white paper. It's actually not a pure black, its more of a soft, understated black to go with this elegant invitation set. Each invitation left room for the individual guest's names to be written on by hand, a unique way to personalize your invitations. The suite included the 5x7 invite, response card, reception card, and an "At Home" card since the wedding is being held in Ireland. Printed on 140lb. 100% cotton paper, this line is eco-friendly and the paper is thick enough for a substantial letterpress indentation.

The order was huge, over 220 sets to calligraph outer and inner envelopes and one to two names on each invitation. I was relieved to get it in the mail last Thursday afternoon! The calligraphy style for the entire order was Bickham Swash Caps.

Seattle Opera Gala

Last Thursday I spent the entire day calligraphing these paper circles for Seattle's Opera Gala, held at McCaw Hall in the emerald city. The gala was held to benefit the Seattle Opera’s education and outreach programs. I was approached by Kelley Moore and Whitney Speir of Brown Sugar Designs to get involved with the hand-lettering of these unique placecards. They are written in white copperplate script on "beet" colored circles available at Paper Source. It was an honor to be involved with such a terrific cause. For more, check out Kelley Moore's blog.

Calligraphy in the Ella Style

I just wanted to share some photos of an order I just finished up for a lovely gal in St. Louis, Missouri. These black envelopes looked stunning with white calligraphy for the guest addresses. At the last minute, we decided the return addresses would truly complete this lovely calligraphy package and I wrote them all on last weekend.
I really love the Ella style {as you saw in yesterday's} blog, and I just don't think it always gets the attention it so deserves. It is fun, and contemporary, yet it is also really pretty. It looks great. I have an invitation and a save the date in the works in the Ella Style so stay tuned for more of this fantastic script.

Ketubah Calligraphy

The Jewish Wedding Contract, or Ketubah, is the perfect opportunity to use hand lettered calligraphy. This Ketubah shown here was used for a reform couple who elected to have their wording scripted in my Ella script style. It looks gorgeous in Navy blue and perfectly accentuates the beautiful print they ordered. At the bottom there is room for witness signatures and everything. This is a reform Ketubah and is written entirely in English. It's absolutely gorgeous.
Now, if you aren't Jewish, don't be sad, we can still do your vows in calligraphy, or even a really nice poem or lyrics to a very special song. It looks amazing when it's completed.
For more information about having your vows written in calligraphy, please email me for details!
